    Let there be light

I love my house! I knew the moment I walked in that it was my house and I’m so happy to be here. For almost he whole of last year I had time to plan how I wanted to decorate and style my house. Many hours have been spent pouring over Pinterest, home magazines and loads of great home websites and blogs. One of the ideas I came across that I love the most is glass roofs. They just transform a space and make it so much lighter and brighter. My house isn’t laid out in a way that I could have one, but if I ever win the lottery…

    Filling your new home

I moved from a one bedroom flat, to a three bedroom house – I therefore have many many times more space. Much as I didn’t want to fill it completely, I needed more items to fill some of the rooms I had never had before (like my study and a guest room). I had budgeted to make my purchases but I really don’t like spending money on things if I don’t have to. Here are some of my top bargains and where I got them from: My desk – I had chosen a desk from Ikea that new cost about £175. I found the exact model on Freecycle – for,…

Home is where the heart (and cat) is

I viewed the property I now call home for one reason and one reason only. It was the only detached property in my budget and in my search area. I had very low expectations and was only seeing it to compare the space to a end of terrace or semi-detached. I walked in and my heart leaped. There was something about the house. The layout, the features, the fact it was empty (so I could picture my stuff in there). It just felt perfect. It felt like “my” home there and then. I went back later that day for a second viewing (as I was relocating so it was a…

    15 shades of grey

This post is almost certainly not going to be about what you think it is. When I moved into my house, I did a lot of basic DIY and painting. One of the things I wanted to do was paint the bedroom a pale/soft grey. I purchased a few testers, applied some to the wall and let them dry. They just weren’t right. I purchased a few more. Still not quite what I wanted. In the end I tried 15 shades of grey (paint) just to find the right fit for my bedroom. It sounds crazy right but it’s totally true. None of them looked like I thought they would…

    Estate Agents

Online estate agents are popping up all over the place. Whilst they sell themselves on being commission free, whatever the result of the sale, you are committed to paying the fee you agreed to. If the sale falls through or you end up not moving, this can leave you drastically out of pocket, so are they worth it? In my opinion no, but it really is personal preference. The reason I went with a high street estate agent is that I felt I had a named person to contact, and even a named office to pop into if I ever had any concerns. They knew that all the viewings and…

A lick of paint goes a long way

When I moved into my new house, there were so many things that I just didn’t love. Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE my house, but there were a lot of things that just weren’t my taste. It really is amazing what a lick of paint can do to transform a space. Here’s some of my favourite transformations that I did all by myself! Kitchen This drab and dull brown kitchen was transformed into a retro 50s diner with white tile paint, black tile decals and blue furniture paint!             Hallway I really didn’t like the brown bannisters and stair handrail. The skirting the…
